CATE is an extension of the well-received Windsor conferences, which were organized around a focus on thermal comfort.
The first CATE Conference was held in April 2019 at Heriot-Watt University in Dubai to facilitate knowledge exchange on energy, economy, and climate. CATE brought together leading thermal comfort researchers who showed how buildings, cities, and shelters could provide comfort, thermal safety, and health in a warming world.
The second CATE Conference was held in October 2021 at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. This conference stressed the urgent need for reseach on pathways to adapt to the impacts brought about by changing climates. It highlighted research surrounding energy systems and societal pressures on the sustainability and resilience of built environments, ecosystems, and countries.
The third CATE Conference was held in Edinburgh in 2022. In the wake of the pandemic, the conference focused on shifting views of buildings and health. It invited the exchange of scientific knowledge on emerging research, new thinking, and innovative design developments to keep people safe, healthy, and comfortable.
The fourth CATE conference took place in December 2023, in Ahmedabad, India. Ahmedabad brought diverse groups together to discuss interdisciplinary solutions and strategies aimed at climate change and associated extreme events and the need to address these challenges across built environment scales.
The fifth CATE Conference was held in Seville, Spain in November 2024. Under a philosophy of investing in well-being in a challenging future and a theme of Exploring the Boundaries of Comfort: Navigating the Challenges of Tomorrow, CATE 2024 continued the collective effort to unravel the complexities of well-being amidst the challenges that clearly lie ahead for our built environment.
