This series of CATE 2026 talks highlights the people answering questions long at the forefront in the Sonoran Desert, including water scarcity and extreme heat.
Tucson is at the leading edge of Net Zero Urban Water, an approach that aims to show how urban greening is possible by redesigning urban water systems to incorporate stormwater, graywater, and reclaimed wastewater. The University of Arizona research team behind this project will share their approach and promising results.
The Sonoran Desert has long been hot, but recent years have seen a significant warming trend. In 2020, Phoenix had 145 days with a high temperature above 100° F (38° C); in 2024, 143; in 2023, 133. Tucson is relatively cooler, with only 112 days over 100° F in 2024. Heat expert Ladd Keith will explain how the region is leading efforts to adapt to a hotter present — and future.
